We will use lectures, discussion, videos, pictures from my study tours and in-class activities to familiarize students with the many and fascinating aspects of Chinese history and culture. We will start with a look at the geography of this expansive country, consider basic beliefs of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism, and review the highlights and contributions of the major Chinese dynasties. We will take a close look at the past two centuries of Chinese history starting with the 19th century foreign and internal developments that many Chinese regard as the very lowest point in a very long history, then proceeding though the remarkable decades of Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Xi Jinping which many Chinese regard as the foundation of a new and unprecedented era of Chinese global influence and leadership.
