Driver's Education Program

Lexington Community Education is pleased to offer driver's education for all Lexington High School students. This education program is being taught by Cam's Auto School of Waltham, who provide a complete program that meets all of the state requirements, including classroom and behind the wheel education. It is open to all students who are a minimum of 15 years and 9 months old when the class begins.

We offer a variety of schedules for students. Some programs meet in the afternoon from 3pm to 5 pm, and some programs meet at night from 7 pm to 9 pm. Please make careful note of the days and dates and times of the program you choose to make sure that the student will be able to attend every class. Students may make up missed lessons at LHS as long as there is room in the classroom (i.e. the class is not filled.) Students should allow a minimum of 3 to 4 months to complete the training.

The November and February programs will meet in the evening. The parent's class is MANDATORY for at least one parent, and may be taken anytime in the process.

NEW STATE REQUIREMENTS

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has re-written the requirements for driver's education in response to many tragic auto accidents involving teenage drivers in an attempt to better prepare drivers for a lifetime of safe and courteous driving. These new requirements commenced on September 1, 2007.

If a student has a learner's permit issued BEFORE SEPT. 1, 2007, then that student has two years in which to fulfill the state requirements for a driver's license. A student with a permit issued prior to Sept. 1st need only fulfill the old requirements with 6 hours of behind the wheel training.

All students with permits issued after Sept. 1st must fulfill the new Registry of Motor Vehicles requirements, which include:

  • 30 hours (15 lessons of 2 hours each) of classroom instruction
  • 12 hours of behind the wheel instruction
  • 6 hours of observation of behind the wheel instruction
  • Mandatory 2 hour class for parents
  • Written test (after classroom and BTW training is complete)

BEHIND THE WHEEL

Only students with OPEN CAMPUS rights may leave school during school hours for behind the wheel training. Those students who do not have OPEN CAMPUS permission must wait until after school, at 3 pm, to begin behind the wheel training. Behind the wheel driving appointments are made by calling CamÕs Auto School directly. If you have a valid learnerÕs permit, you may schedule your driving lessons as soon as you register for driverÕs education.

TUITION

The cost for the program described above is $565. Payment may be made by check or credit card (Visa or MasterCard only.) If paying by check, please write two separate checks as follows: one for $525 made out to Cam's Auto School, and one for $40 made out to Lexington Community Education. If paying by credit card, there will be two charges, one for $525 to Cam's Auto School and one for $40 to Lexington Community Education.
