Robert Rivera :: Bass Guitar and Cello

Robert Rivera is a classical cellist and composer, who has studied cello since age seven. Robert studied at the Manhattan School of Music, the Longy School, the Boston Conservatory, and the Moscow Conservatory, and is now a graduate student at the New England Conservatory. He has played extensively in the US and Europe, working in genres as diverse as classical and jazz. The Boston Herald (02/03/2003) said, "Cellist Robert Rivera stays in motion, it's a rush."

For the past 15 years, Robert has taught cello privately and coaches chamber music for duos, trios and quartets. Currently he is composing and recording music in his studio for an iPod narrative download project for the African American Museum of History in Boston. Past experience includes music written and recorded for film and commercials.

Other experience includes three years as Manager of a recording studio in New York City. Still affiliated with this studio, Robert does session work there periodically. The Rolling Stones recorded seven of ten new tracks of their latest album, Exile on Main Street, at this studio.

Robert is a cello teacher with The Cello Studio and Musika New York City in Boston, MA. He is also the Music Director at the Langham Hotel in Boston, where he leads the Robert Rivera Trio at Cafe Fleuriis Sunday brunch. He works with Vermont Violins, W. Lebanon, NH as a violin dealer in the Boston area. Since 2003, Robert has worked with poet Regie Gibson and the group Neon Juju and they were featured on an Art in Bloom public television (WGBH) segment, which aired nationally in June 2004. He was a 2009 member of the Waltham Symphony Orchestra, Waltham, MA and a member of the Musikfabric Ensemble, Germany, from 2000 - 2001.

In collaboration with composer Benjamin Keddy, Robert has composed film scores that won the following awards:

  • Winner: Best Original Score for film "Sympathetic Details" at the 2008 Almost Famous International Festival.
  • Nominated: Best Original Score for film "Sympathetic Details" at the 2008 Naperville International Film Festival.
  • Nominated: Best Original Score for film "Sympathetic Details" at the 2008 Buffalo Niagara Film Festival.
  • Nominated: Best Original Score for film "Sympathetic Details" at the 2008 Detroit Windsor International Film Festival.
