For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway is a war story, a love story, and a superb example of Hemingway’s skill with characterization, dialogue and local color. Reading approximately 75 pages per week, we will spend online classes primarily discussing his marvelous novel. We will discover how and why the good characters are often not-so-good, and what happens when self-sacrificing idealism confronts down-to earth and cynical realism. We will also read relevant background material about the Spanish Civil War and Hemingway, and deepen our understanding through questions for reflection. Finally, we will compare scenes from the book to its film adaptation, as we watch video clips from the 1943 classic movie. Please read chapters 1-4 before the first session.
