In this two-hour class we will look at the impact of jazz on Gershwin– and the impact of Gershwin on jazz! Among Gershwin’s many talents, he was a terrific pianist whose playing was influenced by jazz. We will listen to some of his recordings at the piano, and some of his written music for the piano, and compare them to jazz pianists of the day. At the same time, Gershwin’s songs became favorites for jazz artists to improvise upon. We will sample Embraceable You performed by Billie Holiday and, later, by Charlie Parker,  Who Cares? performed by Benny Goodman, Summertime performed by everybody, from Sidney Bechet to John Coltrane, and much more. And we will learn how and why literally thousands of jazz songs are inspired by I Got Rhythm.

Lewis Porter, P.h.D., is a pianist and composer on 33 albums with Dave Liebman, John Patitucci, Terri Lyne Carrington, and many others. He has also performed in Lexington with Liebman, Carrington, Joe Lovano and Jerry Bergonzi, as well as two-piano concerts with Vijay Iyer and with Ethan Iverson. He is a celebrated author, researcher, and educator, with many awards and a Grammy nomination.
