Masters of Percussion – Fall

Course Code: HPOM Categories: , , Tags: ,

Unlike just about every other well known instrument, the Classical drum set is a unique creation of the United States. In this class we will take a look at the history of the creation, compilation and development of the drum kit, and listen to/view on video a wide array of masters of percussion, all while being led in discussion by a master musician and educator. We will examine what makes each percussionist unique in approach, technique, and philosophy. We will come away with a better understanding and appreciation for the harmonic and rhythmic quality of music, and the percussion masters that give a foundational heart (and contribute to) melodies and maestros across genres (with special attention given to jazz, jazz fusion, and rock). From Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Mitch Mitchell and Ginger Baker, to Ra Kalam Bob Moses, Terri Lyne Carrrington, Neil Peart, and Trilok Gurtu, find out why the drum stands at the center of what makes musicians groove and listeners move.
