There’s more to Cuba than old cars and cigars. If you’re planning a trip there or are just curious about the culture, join us. We’ll discuss how to initiate the travelling process and what is and is not legal when you’re there. You’ll learn about how Cubans manage day-to-day challenges with resourcefulness and resilience. We’ll view select samples of Cuban artwork—from museum pieces to street murals—and you’ll hear about art tours, our instructor’s speciality. If you’re not planning a trip to Cuba, you can still experience its sights and sounds from the comfort of our classroom, and appreciate learning more about this country’s cultural gems.
Laura Quincy Jones and Yasser Torriente-Rodríguez are a US-Cuban couple living and working in Havana, Cuba. Laura is a painter, writer, and teacher from Boston, MA, USA; Yasser is a mechanical engineer born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Together, the couple collaborates with Cuban friends and colleagues to host international visitors on cultural experiences with their small tour company, Cuba Art Adventures.
Before coming to Cuba, Laura found her professional passion by teaching literacy in inner-city schools in Oakland, CA and Boston. Then she enrolled herself in the school of life, learning about organic farming by working on farms across Australia and Japan, illustrating after the farm work was done. She continued solo slow-traveling and making illustrations across Russia and in Cuba, which opened the current chapter of her life adventures. Laura holds degrees from Brown, Cambridge, and Tufts universities in political philosophy and education. In Havana she loves teaching, painting, and focusing on her family in a very authentic culture.
Yasser grew up in a big family of educators who supported one another during the extremely challenging period of shortages in Cuba during the 1980s and 1990s. He learned English in school and from family members who had studied it, as he did with engineering. Completing his degree in mechanical engineering at Havana’s science and technology university, he did his military service in the ceremony squad and then worked as an engineer in the petroleum sector. Yasser also loves cooking Cuban soul food, salsa dancing, traveling, and being a Dad.
Yasser and Laura have a fun baby daughter, Rosa, who helps with everything.
