Salvete! (Greetings!) Have you ever wondered what it was like to live
during the Roman Republic, and write or speak Latin? Do you want to learn
to wrap yourself in a toga, learn about mosaics, Roman holidays, and learn
what the Romans ate and how they prepared it? Each day will have a
theme (for example, greetings and names, trades, pastimes, and
architecture). We will also explore a myth each day (including writing and
acting out our own mythological play), and an overview of a period of
Roman history. Some activities will include decorating a t-shirt with a Latin
motto, coloring or creating a mosaic, learning about Roman recipes and
food preparation. We’ll watch some video clips about Roman culture. We’ll
do all these things and learn a little Latin along the way! No previous
knowledge of Latin required.

Maureen Haviland is a Grade 9-12 Latin teacher at Lexington High School.
