John Claybourne

Drums

JL (John Luther) works as a freelance drummer & music educator. Along with having taught over 900 students face to face, he continues to display a signature ‘pocket’ at various music festivals, venues, and recording studios on the East Coast (USA). In 2021 he was awarded “Blues Foundation – Band Granite State Winner” with Ms. Vee. JL regularly performs with The Diplomats of Funk, Kong, KaBeatles, Leon Beal, Valerie Stephens, Joey Blake, Boston Rock and Soul Revue, Mythical Beasts, Frankie Boy and The Blues Express, Joey Mazz,  Rock Voices Choir, and Robert McFletcher-Jones.

Mr. Claybourne’s an alum of the Lexington High School (MA) music program (directed by Jeff Leonard), JCSU International Institution of Sound (HBCU), Funk Phi Mob drum line, a graduate of Berklee College of Music (2000), and member of the Percussive Arts Society.

He’s presented clinics at various schools from MA to NJ. JL has also served as a replacement adjudicator for the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) in CT, and Guitar Center’s National “Drum Off” Competition (New London, CT).

Mr. Claybourne is a former student of Alan Dawson, John Ramsay, Kenwood Dennard, Steve Wilkes, Jackie Santos, Larry Finn, Dave “yP” Cowan, and Poogie Bell among others.
