Description

Tai Chi San Shou, often referred to as “free hand” or “free fighting,” is a choreographed two-person sparring set. This traditional training method reveals the martial arts applications of Tai Chi Chuan, focusing on sparring techniques like striking, kicking, joint locks, and takedowns. Unlike the slow Tai Chi basic form, it involves “free hand” training with a partner to apply Tai Chi principles—such as yielding and using leverage—as in
self-defense. Mastering the Tai Chi San Shou forms deepens one’s understanding of Tai Chi Chuan and its techniques. To truly grasp the Tai Chi basic form, one must study Push Hands and San Shou, to allow for a deeper comprehension of the art. The San Shou form is divided into two parts: Side A and Side B. It is first learned solo, then later practiced with a partner. For the autumn term, we will be learning Side A of the form – which consists of 46 moves. The pre-requisite for learning San Shou is being completely fluent and fluid in Advanced Tai Chi, and having learned Push Hands. This class is a continuation of the “Advanced Tai Chi” class, and the students will also learn Tai Chi San Shou. The Eight Pieces of Brocade Qigong will again be used as warm-up exercises before practicing the Tai Chi form. Wear loose, comfortable clothes and soft-soled shoes, such as flat sneakers. Outdoor shoes are not permitted inside the studio.
Virginia Payne has been practicing the traditional Yang style Tai Chi long form since 1990, along with its complete suite of Tai Chi Push-Hands, Sanshou, Sword, and Saber.
