Description
Spring poems often begin in the visible world: thawing ground, tentative blossoms, longer light. Traditionally, they have been linked to renewal, rebirth, and the cyclical pattern of birth and death. Yet many modern poets use the season less as subject than as a point of entry an occasion for thinking about loss, memory, desire, uncertainty, or hope. In this two-session class, we’ll read poems that are about spring but move beyond seasonal description to explore more layered emotional and philosophical terrain. Through close reading and conversation, we’ll investigate how poets such as Louise Glück, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Denise Levertov, and others enlist the imagery of spring to ask questions about change, perception, and inner life. The class invites attentive readers who are curious about poetry and enjoy attentive reading.
