Description

We will begin our spring opera class with Tchaikovsky’s most loved opera, Eugene Onegin. This is part of the Metropolitan Opera’s HD movie theater presentations. The opera is based on Pushkin’s verse-novel of the same name. It is a story of unrequited love and its tragic consequences. Tchaikovsky’s score is full of lyrical melody and enjoyable dances. In our next three classes we will focus on the development of German Romantic Opera – non Wagnerian. Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Strauss (Richard) – are often thought of as the only developmental line for German Romantic Opera. But is this really the case? No. Other German composers helped in this evolution. Some of them might be familiar to you such as Franz Schubert and Carl Maria von Weber; but others such as E.T.A. Hoffmann and Albert Lortzing are not so familiar. Let’s learn about the contributions that these and other composers made to the development of German Romantic Opera as we explore the wealth of great music and gripping drama in these operas. We will use audio and video throughout the classes.
