The World of the Shining Prince: Navigating The Tale of Genji
$150.00 – $165.00Price range: $150.00 through $165.00
Description
While the 11th-century Japanese masterpiece The Tale of Genji is often celebrated for its historical importance, its true power for a modern English-speaking reader lies in its profound psychological depth. Writing nearly a millennium before the “modern” novel took shape in the West, Murasaki Shikibu—the author and a court lady—crafted a compelling narrative that captures the nuances of human desire, the ache of memory, and the complexities of social identity with a sophistication that feels very contemporary. Reading it is not merely a trip through history; it is an encounter with a voice that understands the human heart—its obsessions, its vulnerabilities, and its resilience—in a way that transcends the boundaries of time and culture. The goal of this course is to provide a clear, engaging path through this masterpiece without getting lost in its immense scale. Using the Dennis Washburn translation, we will navigate a curated selection of fifteen of the work’s fifty-four chapters, tracing the narrative from the “Shining Prince’s” rise to the complex, multi-generational drama of the book’s conclusion.
